Zantac Injury Lawsuits
Dangerous Pharmaceutical Attorneys Helping Injured Clients
Drugstores across the United States are pulling ranitidine-based heartburn medications from the shelves after the FDA announced that Zantac and its generic forms contain NDMA, a cancer-causing material. Because of these laboratory findings, several ranitidine heartburn medications have been recalled, including the various forms of Zantac.
Those affected by this NDMA contamination could be at risk of developing certain cancers, including stomach, bladder, intestinal, and liver cancer. If you or someone you love developed cancer after using Zantac or another heartburn medication containing ranitidine, our firm is here to help.

About Zantac: Everything You Need To Know
Ranitidine, the main ingredient in Zantac belongs to a family of drugs called H-2 blockers, or histamine-2 blockers, that cut down the amount of acid your stomach produces. In doing so, these H-2 blockers effectively staunch heartburn symptoms, and at prescription-strength, they can also help treat ulcers.
Zantac is one of the most popular forms of ranitidine, and first hit the U.S. market for sale in the early 1980s. Since then, it has been wildly popular and gained notoriety as the world’s best-selling prescription drug by 1987. Sanofi, the current manufacturer of Zantac, recently issued a voluntary recall for all Zantac products after an FDA press release confirmed that several ranitidine products contained small amounts of NDMA, a probable carcinogen.
How is Zantac Dangerous?
The FDA confirmed in a press release in September of 2019 that Zantac and its generic forms were contaminated by an impurity called N-nitrosodimethylamine, or NDMA. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), “NDMA is classified as a probable human carcinogen (a substance that could cause cancer) based on results from laboratory tests.”
The FDA received a tip from a Connecticut lab called Valisure, claiming that ranitidine medications contained unsafe amounts of NDMA. This lab discovered that NDMA levels didn’t just spike in the drug itself, they increased once consumed. In other words, Zantac and other ranitidine medications reacted to the human body in such a way that converted certain substances of the drug into NDMA inside the body. The test results showed that, within the body, the levels of NDMA were 400 times greater than what the FDA has deemed acceptable.
What Are the Potential Side Effects?
Before any voluntary or mandatory recalls were in place, several drugstores, including CVS and RiteAid removed all ranitidine drugs from their shelves as a precaution. These stores took immediate action because the link between NDMA and cancer is pronounced and dangerous, which is why anyone who has been exposed to Zantac and its generic forms should take caution.
The FDA claims that NDMA is reasonably safe to consume in small doses, and it goes so far as to regulate how much NDMA is in our food and drinks, weeding out any products that contain hazardous levels of the component. However, if exposed to NDMA on a regular basis or in high dosages, it can increase your risk of developing certain cancers.
NDMA contamination in Zantac and ranitidine medications can cause:
- Bladder cancer
- Colon cancer
- Rectal cancer
- Intestinal cancer
- Liver cancer
- Pancreatic cancer
- Stomach cancer
- Uterine cancer
- Esophageal cancer
- Kidney cancer
