You must have worked long enough and recently enough to be covered by Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). Work credits are based on your total yearly wages, and you can earn up to four credits per year. SSD eligibility based on work credits will vary depending on your age, ranging from 6 credits for workers under the age of 24 all the way to 40 credits for workers over the age of 62. - You must meet the SSA’s definition of “disability.” The SSA determines eligibility for SSD benefits based on total disabilities, which render you unable to work.
