Hot weather is an easy prompt for summer trips to the beach and the pool
to cool off. However, there are many safety issues when engaging in water-related
activities that parents and caregivers should be aware of.
Drownings are the top cause of injury death for children between the ages of 1 and 4. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) summer swimming campaign, Pool Safety, focuses on people most at risk of drowning, and seeks to encourage parents and caregivers of children to help them learn to swim and take water safety seriously. Here are some important things to keep in mind:
– Never leave a child unattended in a pool or spa and always watch your child when he/she is in or near water of any kind
– Have a phone close by when you or your family is using a pool or spa
– Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings to avoid entrapments
– Teach children the basic water safety tips, and share safety instructions with family, friends and neighbors
– If a child is missing, look in the pool or spa area first
– Understand the basics of life-saving and learn to perform CPR on children and adults so that you can assist in a pool emergency
– Keep pool and spa covers in good working order, and consider installing alarms or barriers to alert you when children go near the water
