Avid cyclists are starting to mount video cameras on their bike helmets to help police capture motorists involved in collisions with bikers. The New York Times recently reported that after a Washington, D.C., cyclist was clipped by a hit-and-run driver, the runaway motorist was arrested after being identified on video taken from the cyclist’s helmetcam.
Helmet cameras, which were originally developed to capture the action in sports like whitewater rafting and skiing, are now helping capture careless and reckless drivers in confrontations with cyclists.
Bike stores are reporting increasing sales of the cameras which some liken to the “black box” on airliners.
