This month, the N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded $390,000 in grants to 12 cities and towns across the state of North Carolina, marking the ninth year of the grant program. The grants are awarded to help communities develop plans and strategies for expanding bicycle and pedestrian opportunities within the municipalities.
Regions were selected by an awards committee composed of transportation planners from across the state, and this year’s recipients are scattered across the western, central and eastern regions of the state. Charlotte's neighboring regions of Gastonia and Mount Holly were selected this year, and will be awarded $39,000 and $31,500, respectively, for their pedestrian plans to be put into action, starting this fall.
The planning grant initiative is sponsored by the N.C. Department of Transportation’s Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation and the Transportation Planning Branch. Since 2004, 3.6 million has been awarded to 135 communities through the planning grant program. Not only is the initiative affording safer options for pedestrians and bicyclists, but it is providing outlets for healthy exercising.
