CHARLOTTE, N.C., October 31, 2011 — Brooklyn Young started college this fall at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with help from a CR Legal Team Next-Step Scholarship. Young transferred to UNC from Alamance Community College after completing her associates degree in 2010 Homeless since 2006 when her mother died of cancer, Young struggled to complete high school while moving more than a dozen times in three years — staying with family and friends, working long hours, and helping care for her younger brother.
"It has truly been a blessing to be a recipient of the 2011 CR Legal Team Next-Step Scholarship," Young remarked recently. "Because of the award I am not only accomplishing my educational pursuits, but I’ve also been enabled to have a more well-rounded experience and take advantage of the extracurricular activities that my university offers. The scholarship allows me the opportunity to focus and spend more time on my studies and less time working to pay for my tuition."
The CR Legal Team Next-Step Scholarship is designed for North Carolina community college students planning to transfer to a four-year institution. Scholarship recipients are chosen based on an essay about the importance of education in their life. Recipients receive a $1,000 award and an Apple iPad2.
"I want to encourage others to never allow any obstacle to overtake them or hinder their dream," Young says. "I believe that everything happens for a reason and that by realizing your strength you can move any barrier aside."
Young plans to major in Journalism/Communications with a minor in Spanish. She wants to work in human services to help end homelessness.
CR Legal Team applauds Young and all past scholarship recipients. To date, CR Legal Team has given more than $120,000 in scholarships to 63 students. The 2012 scholarship program opens Jan. 1, 2012. Applications and guidelines will be available on the CR Legal Team Web site at that time.
